How do a church, a cathedral, and a basilica differ?
Mills Baker:
A church serves as a place of worship, where Christians come together to carry out their religious rites, connect with others, and conduct various spiritual activities. These buildings can range from simple and modest to grand and elaborate.
A cathedral is a type of church that serves as the official "seat" of a bishop, or another high-ranking religious leader, in certain denominations. This title is more administrative than literal, which is why you typically find one cathedral per denomination in a city. Since bishops oversee a specific area, known as a diocese in Catholicism, the cathedral is often seen as the central church of that region.
In everyday language, people often refer to large churches as cathedrals, but this is a vague and technically incorrect usage.
A basilica originally referred to a Roman structure designed for public use, featuring architectural elements like colonnades, naves, and aisles. These buildings were used for various purposes, such as trade and business, and can resemble modern pedestrian malls.

Over time, in the Catholic Church, the term evolved. The pope designates some churches as basilicas for various reasons, elevating their significance as important locations:
The papal or major basilicas hold precedence over all other churches. In some rankings, the cathedral (or co-cathedral) of a bishop takes precedence over all other churches in the diocese, even if those churches hold the title of minor basilica. If the cathedral belongs to a suffragan diocese, it yields precedence to the metropolitan cathedral. The cathedral of a primate ranks higher than those of other metropolitans within their jurisdiction (usually a present or historical state). Other church classifications include collegiate churches, which may or may not also be minor basilicas.
Basilicas, as Christian buildings, are primarily associated with Catholicism. Indeed, the most famous basilica in the world is St. Peter's in Rome, which was partly designed by Michelangelo. Its plaza and baldacchino were created by Bernini, and its balcony serves as the place where crowds gather to see the pope.
