Trends may come and go, but blue jeans remain an essential item in every closet. Denim is durable, flattering on all body types, and can last for years, or even decades. However, there's always been a discussion about the frequency of washing jeans, or whether it’s necessary to wash them at all.
A recent expert opinion on this topic comes from the CEO of Levi’s.
Charles Bergh shared his thoughts with CNBC recently, revealing that for him, it’s not about choosing between washing or not washing his jeans. Instead, it’s about being mindful of how he washes them. Bergh avoids using a washing machine and prefers to spot clean when necessary.
"True denim enthusiasts, those who are passionate about their denim, will advise you to never wash your denim in a machine," he shared. "That’s what I do… If I spill some curry on my jeans, I’ll clean it, but I prefer spot cleaning."
At times, jeans require a bit more cleaning. In such cases, Bergh suggests washing them while wearing them in the shower. Yes, you read that correctly. "And if they get really dirty, like if I’ve been out sweating and they become really filthy, I’ll wash them in the shower." Bergh also explained that you can keep the jeans on and scrub them just like you would with bare legs.
Advocates of the no-wash method argue that jeans exposed to the washing machine’s agitation will wear out more quickly, as it stresses the fabric. Washing also fades the indigo dye that sits atop the threads of the jeans. On the other hand, pro-wash advocates believe that jeans require a wash to eliminate germs.
Bergh’s advice mirrors that of other denim experts, who recommend washing jeans as infrequently as possible. If shower washing isn’t your thing, you can opt for a brief washing machine cycle with minimal tumbling, followed by air-drying. Others suggest washing jeans once every 10 wears.
Whether they’ve been washed or not, jeans are remarkably durable. The small metal rivets on the pockets play a significant role in keeping them intact.
