While VPNs are widely known for unlocking international platforms like Netflix and Hulu, they also work for region-specific services such as the BBC. U.K. residents with a TV license can freely stream BBC shows like Killing Eve or Peaky Blinders via the iPlayer app. However, viewers outside the U.K. are typically restricted. Fortunately, a VPN can bypass the BBC iPlayer’s geo-restrictions, allowing you to enjoy British programming from anywhere in the world.
While this might feel ethically ambiguous, it’s not technically illegal. As long as VPNs are permitted in your country (such as in the U.S.), you’re in the clear. Here’s a step-by-step guide to make it happen.
Choose a reliable VPN service
The first and most crucial step is selecting a VPN. Free VPNs are best avoided, as they often come with risks like adware, malware, and scams. Opt for a paid VPN, which is more dependable and costs only a few dollars monthly. These are user-friendly and straightforward to configure. While I favor VPNs known for transparency and robust security, such as Mullvad VPN, most reputable paid VPNs are sufficiently secure for accessing region-locked content on platforms like BBC iPlayer or Netflix. I’ve successfully used Surf Shark for bypassing geo-restrictions, and other options like NordVPN are equally effective.
Ensure your VPN is compatible with all devices you intend to use for streaming BBC content. Most leading VPNs support Windows, Mac, and smartphones, but since BBC iPlayer is also accessible on devices like Fire TV, Roku, and Apple TV, you’ll need a VPN that works on your router if you plan to use these set-top devices. Many paid VPNs offer this functionality, though you’ll need to configure your router to connect to the VPN’s servers. The setup process varies by VPN, but it’s typically managed through the VPN’s desktop application.
Once your VPN is set up, the following steps mirror those in our general guide to accessing region-locked content, but with a specific focus on the BBC—or as they say, a British “flavour.”
Set up a BBC account

To begin, sign up for a BBC account if you don’t already have one. The easiest method is via the official BBC iPlayer website. Even if you’re outside the U.K., you can still register without any issues.
Visit the BBC iPlayer website.
Click “Sign In” and then choose “Register” at the bottom of the login section.
Follow the prompts displayed on your screen.
When prompted for your location, choose “UK,” and enter a valid U.K. postal code. If you’re unsure, a quick Google search for “U.K. postal codes” will help—any valid code will suffice.
Finally, click “Register” to complete the setup.
How to stream BBC iPlayer using a VPN
Activate your VPN on your preferred device.
Connect to a server located in the U.K. (consult your VPN’s website for guidance if needed).
Navigate to the BBC iPlayer website.
Click “Sign in” and enter your BBC account credentials.
Choose a program or film to begin streaming.
(Optional) If prompted, select “I have a TV license. Watch now.”
(Optional) Similarly, choose “Play without PG lock” if asked about parental controls—unless you prefer to enable them, in which case select “Turn on PG lock.” (This can be adjusted later in your account settings.)
That’s everything you need to know—now you can stream BBC shows online, no matter where you are in the world. If you’re still craving more, this method also works for other UK-based platforms like Channel 4’s 4All app and ITV’s ITV Hub.
