To make this a reality, it’s wise to start preparing immediately. There’s no need to delay your goals, so we consulted expert organizers for tips on getting a jumpstart on the upcoming year right now.
Begin Your Tax Preparation
Tax season is approaching faster than you might think. Lindsey Mahanna, a professional organizer and the founder of Clutter to Clarity Home Organizing LLC, advises organizing your paper documents before the year ends. “If you have some downtime during the holidays, take the opportunity to review your long-term files and tidy them up in preparation for tax season,” she suggests. “Even if you only manage to recycle or shred unnecessary items, you’ll simplify the task for when you tackle it later.”
Remember to organize paper receipts and invoices. Simply placing them in a folder can give you a head start.
Tackle Digital Clutter
While physical clutter is a well-known obstacle, digital clutter can be just as detrimental, consuming precious storage on our devices. “If holiday photos are filling up your phone, you’re not alone! Take some time to remove unnecessary photos or outtakes,” advises Rose Pulver, co-founder of The Thoughtful Home. “Clear out emails and text messages to ensure your inbox contains only what’s essential. A digital cleanup before the new year will free up mental space and help you focus on the year ahead.”
Short on time to organize all your photos and videos? Set a timer for five minutes and unsubscribe from email lists that flood your inbox. If organizing everything feels overwhelming, consider using cloud storage to offload some files from your devices.
Focus on Organizing and Clearing Key Home Areas
Even if a full-house declutter isn’t feasible in December, Pulver recommends concentrating on essential areas like the kitchen, pantry, and mudroom (if available). “These spots often turn into catch-alls for items entering or leaving the house, such as schoolwork, books, sports gear, holiday presents, packages, and returns.”
Streamline Your Home Decor
From year-round items like nearly spent candles to neglected tinsel gathering dust, Erica Spruille, a professional organizer and founder of Just BE, LLC, suggests using this time to pare down your decorations. “Concentrate on damaged pieces and heirloom decorations that no longer fit your style or needs.”
It’s also time to part ways with that outdated Live, Laugh, Love sign. “Avoid purchasing trendy decor that might only be used once, as it often ends up contributing to clutter,” the organizer advises.
Establish a Routine for Ongoing Decluttering
Spurille advises setting up a structured system for the upcoming year and marking it on your calendar. This proactive approach ensures you start the year with a strategy to maintain order consistently. “Add reminders for quarterly cleanouts and seasonal wardrobe rotations to your calendar to stay on track throughout the year.”
Outline Your 2025 Objectives
Everyone has aspirations for the new year, so why not start planning early? “Transferring mental clutter onto a tangible paper planner can help clarify your goals for the year ahead,” Pulver explains. “Whether it’s a financial target, a home organization initiative, or simply dedicating more time to family, defining your goals allows you to craft a actionable roadmap.”
