Ever been unsure of what nail shape to request at the salon? Does your finger length or nail bed width play a role? While a manicure is a top-tier self-care ritual, it still involves making some tricky decisions.
Beyond picking the right color, your nail shape plays a crucial role in defining the overall appearance of your mani. Some shapes elongate your fingers, while others make them appear wider or more natural. Experts advise that your nail shape should follow the natural curve of your cuticle line and enhance your finger's natural form. Here's what nail artists and professionals had to say on the matter.
1. Oval

Oval nails gently follow the natural curve of the nail, creating a graceful rounded tip. If your fingers are on the shorter side, oval nails are a fantastic choice. "This shape smooths and elongates wide nail beds, making shorter fingers appear more slender," says Amy Lin.
To create this shape, use your nail file to follow the natural curve of your nail. For the best results, ensure the sides are straight and the top edge has a soft roundness.
Best for: Short fingers with wide nail beds
2. Almond

The almond shape resembles an elongated oval, with the tip tapering into a gentle point. This shape is ideal for smaller hands with short fingers. "The narrow sides create a lengthening effect, making the nail appear longer," says Mary Lennon, "adding a touch of elegance and drama."
To form an oval shape, file your nails similarly to how you'd shape them into a round style, but extend the shape upward and narrow the sides.
Best for: Small hands with short fingers
3. Squared

Square nails have straight sides with a flat top edge. While square nails may give the appearance of shorter, chunkier hands due to "the illusion of a wider nail bed," says Chelsea King, "if you have narrow nail beds and long fingers, the sharp lines of square nails can look incredibly stylish and chic."
Achieve this nail shape by filing in a straight line.
Best for: Long fingers with narrow nail beds
4. Squoval

"A squoval [square-oval] shape is the simplest to maintain," says King. "For most people, it's how their nails naturally grow, so the maintenance is mainly about keeping the shape even."
"To achieve this shape, trim your nails [with nail clippers] to your desired length in a square shape, then use a nail file to round the corners," suggests King. This shape suits all finger types because it’s the most natural but looks best on nails that are no longer than the fingertip.
Best for: All finger types
5. Almond

"An almond-shaped nail is narrow on the sides and wide at the base, tapering to a rounded tip," explains Deborah Lippmann. "This shape elongates and slims short fingers."
To create this shape, file the sides and narrow the tip so the free edge forms a peak-like appearance.
Best for: Short, wide fingers
6. Stiletto

Stiletto nails are bold and long, tapering to a sharp point. Lennon notes that this style is the most challenging to maintain due to its susceptibility to breakage, requiring longer, stronger nails to avoid damage.
To achieve this look, file the sides to create a tapered point at the free edge. This shape is best suited for long nails, but it requires gels or acrylics for reinforcement to keep it intact.
Best for: Long fingers
7. Coffin or Ballerina

This shape, inspired by a coffin or ballerina pointe shoe, features tapered sides. According to Lippman, nails in this style "are narrower than your standard square shape, with a squared-off tip."
This shape suits those with naturally strong, long nails and slender fingers. To achieve it, simply square off the free edge.
Best for: Slim fingers with strong nails
8. Lipstick

The lipstick shape is highly popular among Instagram influencers, known for its ability to create the illusion of longer fingers. This shape looks flattering on both long and short nails.
To achieve this look, file your nails at an asymmetrical angle, creating a diagonal slant that resembles a lipstick bullet," says Lin. "This shape gained popularity through artist Park Eunkyung of Unistella Nails."
Best for: Short fingers with either long or short nails
How to Maintain Your Nail Shape at Home
When it comes to maintaining your nail shape at home—whether or not they are polished—Lennon offers these suggestions:
- Use a finer-grit nail file as the nails grow out to touch up the shape without being too aggressive.
- "When filing, make sure to move the file in one direction only and avoid a 'sawing back and forth' motion," advises Lennon. "This technique gives more control and prevents jagged edges, which can lead to polish chipping." Lennon adds that filing in one direction helps seal and smooth the nail edge.
- After filing, apply a layer of Quick Dry Top Coat, "including a swipe across the tip edge to seal it," Lennon suggests. This will refresh the shine and preserve your nail shape and manicure for longer.
