Nearly every child dreams of sleeping in a bunk bed. Now, you have the opportunity to make that dream come true. If you're constructing the bunk bed in the garage, make sure you can transport it to the bedroom without disassembling it – you wouldn't want to build it twice. Follow these steps to learn how to create a bunk bed.
Required materials:
- Fourteen 2-by-4 wooden planks, each 6 feet (1.83 meters) long
- Extra 2-by-4 wooden planks for the ladder
- Seven 2-by-6 wooden planks, each 6 feet (1.83 meters) long
- Plywood
- Carriage bolts
- Screws
- Nails
Follow these steps:
- Start with four 2-by-6 boards; these will serve as the length of the beds.
- Cut four 2-by-6 boards into 42-inch (1-meter) sections. These will form the width of the beds.
- Join the pieces from steps 1 and 2 to create two rectangular bed frames. Ensure the frames are firmly secured.
- Cut additional 2-by-4s into 42-inch (1-meter) sections. Attach these pieces across the width of the frames to support the plywood, which will hold the mattresses. Position the wood 3 inches (7.6 cm) from the bottom of the frame and space them 18 inches (45.7 cm) apart.
- Cut the plywood to fit within the frame. Place it in the frame to rest on the supports you just attached, creating the mattress base.
- Cut four 2-by-4s into 57½-inch (1.46-meter) sections. These will serve as the vertical posts.
- Decide on the height you want for the bed frames. Secure the frames to the posts at your desired height.
- Ensure the bed frames are level. If adjustments are needed, make them and fasten the frames using carriage bolts.
- Install guard rails by attaching 2-by-4s along each side of the bed frames.
- Fasten four 42-inch (1-meter) 2-by-4s to the vertical posts at the ends of the bed frames. These are the end rails [sources: Furniture, Build Eazy].
- Build a ladder by attaching 42-inch (1-meter) 2-by-4s horizontally between two end rails. Space the 2-by-4s about 10 inches (4 cm) apart. The number of rungs will depend on the height of the top bed.
