With some basic tools and woodworking skills, you can craft your very own wooden ladder for under $20. This ladder will be strong and customized to your desired size. Follow these simple steps to build your own wooden ladder, and we’ll guide you through constructing a 12-foot (3.65-meter) ladder.
Required Materials:
- Two 12-foot (3.65-meter) 2x4 lumber pieces
- Two 8-foot (2.43-meter) 2x3 lumber pieces
- Exterior-grade wood adhesive
- 36 deck screws, 2 ½-inch length
Instructions:
- Align the 2x4 boards side by side, ensuring they are perfectly aligned.
- Mark a spot 8 inches (20.3 centimeters) from one end of each 2x4. The mark should be placed at the center of each board. These marks will serve as the center points for the top rung of your ladder.
- Mark the center points for the remaining rungs. Space the rungs 16 inches (40.64 centimeters) apart.
- Cut out notches for the rungs based on the marks. You will need to carve 2x3-inch (5x7.6-centimeter) rectangles, each 1 1/8 inches (2.9 centimeters) deep. Ensure the notches are centered and uniform. Lining up the 2x4s next to each other makes this step easier.
- Cut each 2x3 board into five 19-inch (48.25-centimeter) pieces to serve as the rungs. You will have nine rungs, plus one extra piece of wood.
- Apply wood glue to the notches. Carefully insert each rung, ensuring it fits snugly and the two 2x4 boards remain parallel once all the rungs are in place.
- Secure the rungs using deck screws. Place two screws on each side of every rung for optimal support.
- Finish your ladder by painting or staining it to protect against outdoor conditions [source: Dave, Wandel, Williams].
Feel free to modify the measurements to create a ladder that’s either taller or shorter.
