Follow the red lines in each illustration to see exactly what to draw in each step. The lines from previous steps are shown in gray. We'll provide an illustration for each step, along with a detailed explanation of how to draw it.
1. Draw the Head and Body

Begin by drawing an oval-shaped head. Below and through the head, sketch an elongated oval with four almost flat sides.
2. Outline the Clothing

Sketch the ears, eyes, and forehead using U-shaped and curved lines. For the nose and frown, use an oval and curved lines. Create the collar using connected U-shapes.
Attach a J-shape to a U-shape for each hand. Connect the hands with a short line. Draw a thin rectangle between the hands, then sketch curved lines and curved rectangles for the cuffs.
3. Eyes, Ears, Hat, and Gloves

For the hat, draw a curved tube under a shape that resembles a slice of bread. Use U-shapes and J-shapes for the irises, pupils, eyelids, and the inner ear. Create a curved tube with short lines for the makeup around the mouth.
Form the collar, shoulders, arms, and elbows. Use U-shapes and J-shapes for the fingers, adding small curves to the thumbs. For the wristbands of the gloves, draw a short line connecting to a longer curved line.
4. Makeup and Costume Details

Add intricate details to the face with short lines, triangles, tiny circles, and a small L-shape. Draw a large teardrop shape. Outline the hatband with a long curve and create elbow patches using a combination of short and longer crisscrossing lines.
Add folds to the coat and define the curved cuffs. Draw a long curve within each oval button. Attach upside-down J-shapes to an oval to form the flower, then curve each teardrop-shaped petal.
5. Shading

Fill in the pupils, darkening everything except the small circles left unshaded. Use a series of short lines to shade the collar, arms, cuffs, buttons, flower, flowerpot, nose, and hatband.
And that's it! Your sad clown cartoon is complete and looking great! Now it's time to speed things up and dive into our next cartoon drawing tutorial.
