The modern web relies heavily on JavaScript, a programming language that enables interactive features on websites. Elements like chat windows, media players, and endless scrolling are just a few examples of what JavaScript brings to the online experience.
When is it a good idea to turn off JavaScript?
Not everyone prefers to browse with JavaScript enabled. The downsides include increased tracking, auto-playing media, intrusive scrolling changes, and more. Disabling JavaScript can stop endless scrolling, which is helpful for reducing screen time. Additional advantages include less tracking, ad blocking, and bypassing paywalls to access free online content.
Even if you wish to turn off JavaScript, your choices are limited due to its widespread use on most websites. Some sites may stop functioning entirely, while others, like Gmail, may switch to a simpler HTML version when your connection is slow. We’ve previously explained how to disable JavaScript on desktop browsers, and now we’ll explore how to do the same on mobile devices.
Before diving in, it’s important to note that many widely-used mobile browsers don’t support JavaScript blocking. For instance, Firefox on Android or iPhone lacks this functionality. However, Safari and Google Chrome, the two most popular browsers on iPhone and Android, do allow you to disable JavaScript. Here’s how you can do it.
How to Turn Off JavaScript in Safari on iPhone

To turn off JavaScript in Safari, launch the Settings app on your iPhone. Next, go to Safari > Advanced and toggle off JavaScript. Open Safari to check if your preferred websites function properly. If you’re dissatisfied with the results, return to Safari settings and re-enable JavaScript.
How to Turn Off JavaScript in Chrome on Android

If you’re using Chrome on Android, open the browser and tap the three-dots menu in the top-right corner. Then, navigate to Settings > Site Settings > JavaScript. Disable JavaScript here to stop it from running in Chrome on Android. You can also tap Add Site Exception, enter a URL, and press Add to allow JavaScript on specific sites.
Unfortunately, Chrome on iPhone does not provide an option to turn off JavaScript.
