Spotify is often taken for granted—until slow streaming speeds or a lack of internet connection prevent you from enjoying your favorite tunes or catching up on podcasts. Fortunately, Spotify now allows you to download music and podcasts to your smartphone or computer, so you can keep listening even when offline. This is especially helpful when you're traveling through areas with poor mobile service. Downloading content instead of streaming it directly from Spotify's servers also helps reduce your data usage.
You can download content on Spotify's Android, iOS, Mac, and Windows apps, as well as the web player, though download capabilities vary based on your account type:
Premium Spotify subscribers can download entire playlists and podcast episodes.
Free users can only download podcasts.
Unfortunately, Spotify doesn’t allow you to download entire albums or individual tracks; instead, you’ll need to add the songs you want to download to a playlist first. However, you can download as many playlists and podcasts as your device’s storage can accommodate.
Downloaded content will stay in your offline Spotify library for as long as you like, but you must reconnect to Spotify’s server at least once every 30 days to confirm your account status. Failure to do so will result in losing access to the downloaded songs.
How to download audio content from Spotify
On desktop (Mac, Windows, web)
Open the Spotify desktop app, or visit open.spotify.com.
Sign in, and ensure your device is connected to the internet.
To download music: Open a playlist and enable the “Download” toggle.
To download a podcast: Click the downward arrow next to the episode’s name.
Wait for the download to complete. Downloaded content will appear in Your Library, marked with a green arrow.
If the download option isn’t available on your desktop app yet, ensure that you’re using the latest version of the app. Then, be patient; as of now, Spotify is still in the process of rolling out this feature.
Mobile (Android, iOS)
Launch the Spotify app and ensure you're connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data (Note: Downloading over mobile may affect your mobile data plan's limits.)
Navigate to the playlist or podcast you wish to download.
On Android: Switch on the “Download” toggle.
On iOS: Tap the downward arrow icon.
Downloaded content will be marked with a green checkmark. You can access all offline files from the “Your Library” section.
