Boric acid is the safest method for humans to get rid of cockroaches. Group4 Studio / Getty ImagesRoaches are prolific breeders that can produce thousands of offspring each year. They prefer dark, damp environments, commonly hiding under sinks and refrigerators. These pests are most active at night. While there are several ways to tackle a roach infestation, boric acid is the only natural solution that works effectively. When used properly, boric acid is a powerful cockroach killer. It’s non-toxic to humans but deadly to roaches, who perish shortly after ingesting it. [source: UKAG]
Here’s how to apply boric acid:
- Remove all items from the kitchen cabinets and clear the space under the sink.
- Thoroughly clean the sink, oven, cabinets, drawers, and countertops using water and a mild detergent.
- Don’t forget to clean behind and beneath the refrigerator, including the pan that collects the defrost water.
- Seal any gaps or cracks in the walls with foam filler or caulk. Avoid using glue, as roaches tend to eat it.
- Evenly spread boric acid over the kitchen cabinets, drawers, countertops, and sink. Be sure to apply it under the sink, oven, refrigerator, and dishwasher. Take care to avoid inhaling the boric acid during application. For optimal results, apply it at night when roaches are active and leave it overnight. If your home has a heavy infestation, consider a more generous application and perhaps leave the house for two to three days.
- The following morning, vacuum up any remaining boric acid and wipe down all treated areas with a damp rag. You should now be free of roaches.
