While posting a random image or two might make your Facebook experience a little more exciting for your friends, it's not difficult to elevate your photo collection to a whole new level. All it takes is dedicating some time to editing your pictures.
When considering photos for Facebook, there are three types of picture editing to keep in mind. First is the selection process, second involves adjusting image properties with design software, and third is organizing your images to make them appealing to your Facebook audience.
Let's begin with the first step -- choosing the right images. This one is simple. Only upload photos you’re comfortable sharing with the entire world. Be considerate and respectful with what you post, and avoid embarrassing yourself or your friends; doing so could lead to losing a few connections. Also, spare your friends from the endless stream of photos of your bellybutton lint. They’ll appreciate your self-restraint.
When it comes to editing your photos, you have a range of options at your fingertips. You don't need to invest in pricey photo-editing software. In fact, there are several powerful free tools available (which you'll learn about on the next page).
Once you've created albums on your Facebook profile, the platform offers tools to help you organize and arrange your photos in a way that's easy for you and your friends to navigate. This makes it quicker for everyone to locate specific images.

Third-Party Tools for Facebook Photos
With Picnik, there’s no need to download or install any software. Simply edit your photos directly in your web browser.

You could certainly invest $100 or more in high-end photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop or Corel PaintShop Photo Pro. However, it's unnecessary. You can find many of the same powerful features in GIMP, a free image-manipulation program. Like many advanced tools, it comes with an array of icons and buttons, so there's a bit of a learning curve involved.
If you're eager to start editing your photos right away, you might want to explore quicker and easier options. The internet is filled with free online photo editors, and unlike traditional software, you don't need to download or install anything on your computer. Just upload your image, make edits directly online, and then share your masterpiece in multiple ways.
You can try out editors like Picnik, FotoFlexer, Phixr, and many others. Once you upload your photo, you can adjust, fix, or distort it however you like. Most of these sites offer auto-correct features for color or contrast issues, with one-click fixes. If the auto-adjustment isn't perfect, you can manually fine-tune those same settings.
These tools offer more than just basic fixes. You can correct red-eye, smooth out blemishes on portraits, and even add text, lines, clip art, vignettes, drop shadows, and much more. For those who enjoy extra creative flair, these editors let you apply fun special effects like blurring, embossing, or unique color treatments.
Many of the top free photo editors are actually built into Facebook. Simply type the name of an editor, like LunaPic, into the search bar, and you'll find that it's also available as a Facebook app. Click 'Go to App' and you can start editing images already uploaded to your Facebook account.
The fun doesn’t end there. Keep reading to learn how to organize your photos more efficiently — making it even more enjoyable for anyone visiting your page to browse your images.
Facebook Photo Editing Tips
LunaPic is one of several editors that seamlessly integrates as an app directly into Facebook.

Click Photo next to the Share button, then choose either Upload a Photo (for one image) or Create an Album (to upload several photos at once). Single images typically don’t require much organization, but when you upload multiple pictures, things can get chaotic quickly if you don’t consider how to categorize them for easy access in the future, months or even years down the line.
Enhance the organization of your photo collection by keeping your images well-ordered on your hard drive. For instance, consider creating folders categorized by the year, month, and specific event you captured. Then, upload carefully selected photos from one event into a single album on Facebook.
For instance, avoid combining all your Halloween photos from various years into one massive Halloween party album. Instead, include only photos from a single year, and clearly label the album (e.g., Halloween Party 2012) to make your organization system as straightforward and user-friendly as possible.
Once you upload your photo collection, Facebook takes you to the Edit Album page, where you can tweak various details of your images. You can add captions to individual pictures, which can be fun but time-consuming if you have many photos. Alternatively, click the Edit Info tab and enter a location and general description for the whole album.
Click on the Edit Photos tab, and you'll have more options for organizing your images. Simply click on a photo to tag (name) the people in it. Start typing a friend's name, and if they're on Facebook, their name will appear automatically. Tagging is quick and helps your friends easily find photos with certain people.
Under each photo, you'll see the Move To drop-down menu. If you accidentally uploaded a photo to the wrong album, this option allows you to move it to the correct one.
While Facebook's photo tools are simple, they're essential for keeping your photo collection organized and preventing confusion for your friends. With the added fun of online photo editors, your images will always have that creative touch. When combined, a well-edited and neatly organized set of photos can truly make your images shine on Facebook.
