We are in an era where gaming has reached unprecedented heights, offering access to an extensive library of games spanning all periods, styles, platforms, and specialized interests. However, while co-op or local competitive gaming is straightforward on consoles when sharing a couch, PC gamers face challenges, as their platform is primarily designed for single-player and online multiplayer experiences.
Fortunately, Valve has introduced a beta feature called Remote Play Together on Steam, enabling users to enjoy locally-based multiplayer games online with friends. According to the official announcement on Steam’s community page, Remote Play Together supports between two and four players (or more in certain cases) to:
Play local multiplayer games online with Steam Friends.
Stream video, audio, input, and voice communication between players seamlessly.
Utilize your personal controllers or share keyboard and mouse controls.
Enjoy gaming together across PC, Mac, and Linux platforms.
Remote Play Together only requires the host to own the game on Steam, allowing friends to join without needing a copy in their Steam library. A surprisingly extensive list of games already supports this feature, with Valve promising more additions soon. While some games may encounter initial issues—given that this is still a beta feature—bugs and compatibility problems are expected to be resolved through regular updates during the testing phase.
How to use Remote Play Together to enjoy Steam games

To enable Remote Play Together, users must first join the Steam beta. This can be done in the Steam desktop app by navigating to Steam > Settings > Account > Beta Participation > Change, then choosing “Steam Beta Update” from the dropdown menu and clicking “Okay” to confirm. After this, Steam will need to update to apply the beta patch.
Once done, start a local multiplayer game that supports Remote Play Together.
While in-game, press Shift+Tab to open the Steam Overlay.
Select the friend you want to invite from your Steam Friends list and click “Remote Play Together.”
After accepting the invitation, your friend will join your lobby and appear in-game. Repeat these steps for each additional friend you wish to invite.
