Having a workout partner is an excellent way to stay motivated. Even if they're just a little faster or stronger than you, they'll encourage you to push beyond your limits. However, it's not always easy to find someone who matches your fitness level exactly and is also enjoyable to be around. The ideal solution might be finding an accountability partner.
In this arrangement, you and your partner don't need to match physically. The only requirement is that you both commit to consistently working out and hold each other accountable. This is similar to the concept we've explored before with your finances and remote work. It's the same principle applied to fitness.
Here’s how it works: you and your friend—or a small group of friends—set clear goals and determine how you’ll achieve them. Then, you check in with each other regularly to ensure everyone stays on track and follows through with the plan.
A simple check-in might be as easy as sending a text: 'I did my morning workout, did you?' Alternatively, you and your friend could choose the same workout program. You could even schedule a Zoom call and work out together at the same time. Or, perhaps, you both press 'play' on an exercise video simultaneously and chat afterward about how it went. The key is being accountable to each other. You’ll encourage one another, and you’ll know that if you don’t follow through, you’ll be letting them down.
Find someone who matches your motivation, or someone who is even more driven than you.
It doesn't matter if they are stronger or faster than you. The connection should be based on mutual motivation and consistency, so choose someone who will inspire you to give your best. Maybe it's the friend who has no trouble getting out of bed early in the morning?
If you tend to talk yourself out of exercising, don't partner with someone who will enable that. On the other hand, if you sometimes overdo it, choose a buddy who will remind you about the importance of rest days, rather than someone who will push you harder.
Where to Find Your Accountability Partner
You may already have someone in mind that you’d like to team up with. But if no one comes to mind right away, there are a few places you can explore to find the right person.
Start by checking out fitness communities on platforms like Reddit (r/xxfitness, r/weightroom, for example, or a group that focuses on your favorite activity). People sometimes post in these groups looking for workout partners or to create accountability groups. You can also begin participating in daily discussions about your own progress, and you're likely to make new friends that way as well.
Social media platforms like Instagram are another great way to connect. Share your fitness activities and check in with friends. The main idea of having an accountability buddy is to publicly commit to your goals. The buddy just provides an audience for your intentions, but the motivation and dedication truly come from within you.
