Jailbreaking is an evolving process that shifts gradually with each iOS update. If you're here, it means you're interested in jailbreaking an older version, specifically 5.0.1. For the most current jailbreak information, don't forget to check our up-to-date jailbreak guide.
IMPORTANT NOTE: While both A5-based and non-A5-based devices running iOS 5.0.1 can be jailbroken, the methods differ. Be sure to follow the correct instructions for your specific device.
Not sure if jailbreaking is for you? We enjoy jailbreaking our iDevices, but it's not for everyone. If you're uncertain, consider reading our reasons not to jailbreak and why jailbreaking is awesome.
How to Jailbreak Older (Non-A5-Based) Devices: A Step-by-Step Guide
The video above demonstrates how the entire process works, both on your computer and iOS device. However, continue reading for the steps specific to non-A5-based devices.
1
Before starting, ensure you're on iOS 5.0.1, as this jailbreak only supports 5.0.1 and not 5.0.0. If you're using 5.0.0, update to 5.0.1. Additionally, make sure your iDevice does not have an A5 chip (this includes iPad 2 and iPhone 4S). Older devices running iOS 5.0.1 should work fine, such as the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 GSM, iPhone 4 CDMA, iPad 1, iPod touch 3G, and iPod touch 4G.

Download redsn03 0.9.10b3 for Mac OS X or Windows.
3
Connect your iDevice to your computer, launch the redsn0w app, and power off your iDevice.
4
In the redsn0w application window, you'll notice a Jailbreak button. Click on it. You'll be instructed to put your iDevice into DFU mode and to press the Next button once you're ready. When you're prepared, go ahead and click it.
5
Press and hold the power button at the top of your iDevice for three (3) seconds. Then, while still holding the power button, press and hold the home button for 10 seconds. Finally, release the power button but keep holding the home button for another 15 seconds, or until redsn0w changes its screen and informs you that it's exploiting your device for the jailbreak.
6
Once redsn0w has completed its task, it will prompt you to select options for the jailbreak. By default, only Cydia will be checked. While most other options may not be necessary, you might want to check Enable multitouch gestures if you wish to add additional multitouch functionality to your iPhone or iPod touch.
7
Wait a few minutes for the jailbreak to finish and for your iDevice to reboot. After it reboots, you'll notice the Cydia icon on your home screen (it may not appear on the first page, so be sure to check other pages). Open it up to explore a variety of jailbreak tweaks.
And that's it! Launch the app, and you're all set. Not sure where to start? Check out our jailbreaking tag page for some suggestions.

1
The greenpois0n absinthe method is straightforward. Simply connect your iPhone or iPad (no need to enter DFU mode or power it off), open the absinthe jailbreak app on your Mac or Windows PC, and hit the jailbreak button.
2
Be patient. Your device will enter a simulated restore session and reboot. When it restarts, DO NOT TOUCH IT. The jailbreak is not complete yet. You'll see a notification on-screen once absinthe finishes its work. It will prompt you to locate the absinthe app on one of your home screen pages. It's not labeled as 'jailbreak' but as 'absinthe.' Tap the app, and your device will reboot with the jailbreak successfully completed.
3
If that doesn't happen, go to the Settings app on your device and turn the VPN toggle switch on (you'll find it near the top of your settings). An error will appear, which you should dismiss, and then after a few seconds, your device will reboot.
Once the jailbreak is finished, you'll find Cydia on one of your home screen pages. Open it and start installing whatever you'd like. Not sure where to begin? Check out our jailbreaking tag page for some inspiration.
