Interview with Carmine Gallo
The Role of Emotion and Storytelling in Persuasion:
Aristotle once said that without emotion, people can't make decisions, and they won't be swayed by your argument. You can't persuade without creating an emotional connection. Interestingly, Aristotle wrote this two thousand years ago, and modern science is proving him right. Studies with MRI machines and other experiments show that decisions are always influenced by emotion. So, if you fail to connect emotionally with your audience, you're missing a crucial part of persuasion, and your influence and effectiveness will be diminished.
How to Overcome Public Speaking Anxiety:
The key is practicing under stress. Psychologists, especially sports psychologists who work with athletes like football kickers or golfers aiming to sink a championship-winning putt, emphasize this. They stay calm in high-pressure moments because they've rehearsed those scenarios countless times, under moderate stress. When it comes to public speaking, you need to practice in front of a small group, even just one or two friends, to simulate mild stress and build your confidence.
