When the initiative to distribute free at-home COVID tests was first announced in December, it didn’t seem too exciting—tests would be reimbursed by insurance, and free tests were available at a few community centers. Thankfully, the program is now rolling out with a key update: You can request free tests through a government website, and they will be delivered directly to your home at no charge.
How to order free at-home COVID tests
The website to remember is covidtests.gov. Beginning on January 19, you can place an order for a set of four tests to be sent to your address. (As of Jan. 18 at 12 p.m.: Some people have been able to place orders already, though I couldn’t access the ordering page when I checked. This seems to be rolling out in stages, so keep trying!)
White House officials predict that tests will be shipped within 7 to 12 days after placing an order. To receive the tests, simply provide your name and address. If you also include your email, you will receive updates on the shipping status.
A phone number will also be available for placing orders, though it has not been released yet.
The four-test limit applies per address. (Fun fact: If the first test is negative, you're encouraged to test again, meaning four tests are enough for two people.) Administration officials didn't explain why four was chosen as the limit, but they did suggest that it's the best they can offer right now:
If individuals run out of tests, other testing options will be available, including pharmacies, online services, 20,000 free testing sites, and for patients of community health centers, free tests and pick-up at those locations.
Other methods to obtain free tests
If you have private insurance, you're entitled to reimbursement for at-home COVID tests that you purchase independently. This rule went into effect on January 15, so be sure to keep your receipts and consult your insurance provider for the details.
At-home tests are also being provided at various locations, including community health centers and rural health clinics nationwide.
