Vizio recently faced criticism for collecting data from customers who had opted out. This raises a compelling question: can my TV gather and share my personal information? Yes, this option is often tucked away in the settings of most smart TVs under terms like 'viewing data' or 'Internet-based ads.' If you prefer not to be tracked, you can opt out.
Consumer Reports provides an easy-to-follow guide on how to disable data collection based on your TV brand. For instance, here’s how you can do it with Vizio models:
Most of Vizio's recent TVs run on the Google-powered SmartCast system. To disable Smart Interactivity, open the Vizio app on a mobile device, go to Settings, and select Reset & Admin. Use the on-screen slider to turn off this feature.
Older Vizio models, as well as newer D-series models, use the Vizio Internet Apps (VIA) platform. To opt out, head to the System settings, find the Reset & Admin menu, locate Smart Interactivity, and disable ACR by pressing the right arrow.
On Samsung devices, go to Settings, select Support, then tap on 'Terms & Policies.' From here, you can turn off 'Internet-Based Advertising' and uncheck the following options:
Viewing Information Services
Voice Recognition Services
Nuance Voice Recognition and Privacy Notices
