The excitement of Santa Claus's arrival. The scent of a cedar tree. The taste of warm Christmas cookies. Christmas, at its core, is a holiday that stimulates our senses. The way things sound, look, feel, smell, and taste remind us of holidays gone by, flooding us with nostalgia and joy.
The most effective way to rekindle these memories—and create new ones with our loved ones—is to surround ourselves with elements that evoke the season. Decorating is one of the easiest and most joyful ways to do this. Whether you're hosting an intimate gathering or a large celebration, adorning your home with seasonal beauty will please the senses and fill everyone with holiday cheer.
Ornament Centerpiece: Before you start building your Christmas centerpiece, gather the following materials:
- Dry floral foam
- Knife
- Brass bowl (4 to 6 inches high)
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Ruler
- Evergreen branches
- 14 Christmas ornament balls
- 12 small pinecones
- 1 spray of plums (or approximately 7 plums)
- 4 berry sprays, cut into pieces
- 3 poinsettia flowers with leaves
To create your ornament centerpiece:
- Trim the floral foam to fit your bowl and secure with glue. (For easier cleanup, use a plastic liner if you prefer not to glue the bowl.) Cut the evergreen boughs into five to six-inch pieces. Attach the greens around the edge of the container to create a base.
- Arrange Christmas ornaments, pinecones, plums, and berry sprays on the foam and greens, securing each piece with hot glue.
- Glue sprigs of greens, poinsettia flowers, and leaves to fill in any gaps between the ornaments and pinecones for a full, balanced look.
The Colors of Christmas Christmas revolves around vibrant hues. Sparkling lights, colorful stockings, and beautifully wrapped presents take the spotlight. The colors you select for your holiday decorations can influence the emotions they evoke. Think about the atmosphere you want to create—whether icy and dramatic, cozy and traditional, modern and fresh, or elegant and luxurious—before choosing your color palette.

Your decorating ideas don't have to stop here.I'm dreaming of a white Christmas: A white Christmas can be both timeless and sophisticated or fresh and glamorous. The charm of decorating with white lies in its versatility. In modern homes, an all-white Christmas is in vogue: sleek, contemporary, and stylish. For more traditional settings, an all-white theme brings a cozy, handmade holiday feel. Glimmering white lights and silver accents add elegance to a white decorating scheme. Warmth is created by flickering candles or a crackling fire, which highlight the sparkle of any gold or silver touches.

Planning Your Christmas Celebration
©2006 Publications International, Ltd. With the right planning, your dream Christmas party can become a reality.Any event planner or caterer will tell you that the secret to a successful party is thorough planning. Simply preparing a few dishes and sending out invitations isn't enough. Taking a few minutes to plan in advance can save you time and stress later. Spend five or ten minutes imagining the party and walking through the experience as a guest. When the time comes, both you and your guests will enjoy an unforgettable evening!
Dreaming of the Ultimate Party
With the holiday season full of parties, it's best to send your invitations at least three weeks before the event. The sooner you get them out, the less likely your guests are to have other plans. Be sure your invitations include the start and end times of the party, details on the food you're serving—whether it's casual snacks or a full meal—and don't forget to add directions to your venue!
Select a menu where many items can be prepared in advance. Some appetizers and desserts can be made and frozen weeks before the party. Other recipes can be prepped a few days ahead and stored in the fridge. Then, on the big day, simply bake or finish them. Avoid testing new recipes at a party. Either try new dishes beforehand or stick to proven favorites.
Opt for hearty finger foods that don't require utensils. These are easier to eat, help avoid spills, and reduce the amount of dishwashing needed later. If you do decide to serve foods that require dinnerware, make sure there's plenty of seating for guests to comfortably eat. For easier cleanup, choose disposable tableware that you can simply throw away.
Consider the flow of your guests when planning the layout. Position your bar near ice and water, and scatter trays of finger foods across side tables and buffets in your entertainment space. Provide enough chairs so at least half of your guests can sit at once. Place several trash bins out of sight but close to the food and bar to prevent plate pile-ups and traffic jams in the kitchen.
If you're short on time and can't deep clean your home before the party, focus on high-traffic areas like your living room, dining room, and bathrooms. Leave the rest of the house to clean later.
Create the perfect ambiance with festive holiday music playing softly in the background, and candles casting a warm glow throughout the house. Add a personal touch with a fun activity. Encourage your guests to write a holiday wish in a guestbook on the coffee table, or invite them to join you for some caroling. These little thoughtful details will make your party a memorable event.
Send your guests home with a thoughtful party favor. It could be something simple like a small ornament, a bag of homemade cookies, or even a candy cane tied with a bow. It's a sweet gesture that says 'happy holidays' and leaves everyone with a smile.
Inspired Invitations
Your invitation sets the tone for your party. To build excitement, skip the generic phone call or store-bought invitation. Let the theme of your party inspire you to create something special and unique that reflects the spirit of the event.
For a personal touch, why not feature a photo from last year’s party as the front of your invitation? You could also use a family photo in holiday attire or outfits that align with your theme. If you’re feeling creative, have your child draw a picture of the nativity scene, your party, or even a gift. Scan the drawing and print it onto cardstock for a charming, homemade invitation.
Set the mood by creating a custom CD featuring holiday tunes or music that complements your party's theme. Write the details of your event on the CD label, and send it off in a protective bubble-wrap envelope to excite your guests in advance.
For a personalized, hand-crafted touch, buy holiday-themed stamps and use them to create custom invitations. These seasonal stamps come in various designs, making them perfect for emphasizing the theme of your party.
Short on time for crafting your invitations? Simply purchase beautiful note cards and write your invitation by hand with black ink. This thoughtful, elegant approach will give your invite a personal, sophisticated feel.
Themed Christmas Parties
While traditional tree-trimming parties are always fun, there are plenty of other exciting Christmas celebrations to consider. For example, Boxing Day: In old England, servants worked on Christmas Day but had the next day off to visit family. They were often given a box filled with gifts and food as a gesture of goodwill from their employers. Today, Boxing Day is still celebrated as a time to relax and visit loved ones.
This celebration combines the joy of Christmas with the traditions of Boxing Day. Adorn the table with pine branches, holly, mistletoe, juniper berries, cinnamon sticks, oranges studded with cloves, bowls of fresh fruit, and miniature Christmas trees. Wrap small boxes in metallic and festive paper, using them as decor or as gifts for your guests to open after dinner.
Another fun touch is to fill English 'crackers' (colorful paper tubes) with candies and small trinkets. For a distinctive Boxing Day invitation, write the party details on a piece of paper, fold it, and place it inside a small, wrapped box to hand-deliver to your guests.

Le Reveillon
What began as a simple meal after midnight mass has evolved into Le Reveillon, a late-night feast for French families, often featuring many of the same dishes served on Christmas Day. Some families use this time to decorate the tree or exchange gifts. Like many other cultures, the French frequently adorn their homes with nativity scenes, greenery, and candles.
A traditional Christmas in Germany is celebrated throughout December, culminating on Christmas Eve when the tree is revealed. Children must not see the tree until the bell rings, signaling its grand unveiling, decorated with cars, trains, angels, tinsel, lights, and ornaments. Families gather to sing carols, and presents are placed under the tree. The evening concludes with a feast so plentiful it is affectionately known as 'Dickbauch,' or 'fat stomach.' Legend has it that those who fail to feast well will be haunted by demons throughout the night.
To invite guests to an old-world Christmas gathering, print out your invitations, leaving the front blank. Then, attach greenery in the shape of a wreath, using clippings from your tree, mistletoe, or ivy to create a rustic and festive design.
For a traditional party ambiance, decorate with an assortment of nuts, fruits, greenery, marzipan, and charming hand-carved wooden figurines of angels, trees, and Santa. Add candles and other trimmings to complete the scene.
It's time! The day has come, and guests will soon be arriving. You've done everything you can to prepare, and now it's just about adding a few final touches to ensure your celebration runs smoothly and leaves a lasting impression.
The big day is here! Your guests will be at the door any minute. You've prepped as much as possible to ensure everything goes according to plan, leaving only a few last-minute details to make the evening unforgettable.
Ensure your guests' comfort by setting out appetizers in various spots, like the living room, on the buffet, and in other accessible places where guests can easily snack. Enhance the atmosphere with music and soft candlelight for a warm, inviting feel.
Greet your guests by taking their belongings as they arrive. Help them feel at ease by introducing people to each other, highlighting shared interests or connections to spark conversation.
Accept any gifts graciously and take them to a private area, allowing other guests to enjoy the moment without feeling pressured to bring their own gift.
As much as possible, avoid the kitchen so you can interact with your guests and enjoy the party. Most importantly, remember that your holiday gathering should be just as enjoyable for you as it is for your guests.
