Expert Tips for Finding the Perfect Blush Shade
Unsure where to begin? To help you pick the best blush color for your skin, we consulted with renowned makeup artists who generously shared their expert advice.
Consider Your Skin Tone
Just like when you choose foundation based on your complexion or eyeshadow that complements your eye color, it’s essential to think about your skin tone when selecting the ideal blush. Celebrity makeup artist Elaina Badro emphasizes this point.
“Your complexion should guide your blush selection, and it's also important to consider whether your undertone is warm or cool,” she explains. “For lighter skin tones, soft pinks and pastels work best. Darker skin tones look stunning with deep, rich shades like berry, while medium tones—depending on undertone—suit peaches and pinks.”
She mentions that warm undertones benefit from deeper hues due to the red tones in the complexion, while peachy shades, true pinks, and even lilac-tinged colors complement olive skin tones. For cooler undertones, opt for blushes in cool shades like rosy pink, berry, or plum.
Coordinate with Your Lip Color
For a natural, neutral look or a no-makeup makeup style, celebrity makeup artist Neil Young, a key artist at ICONIC London who has worked with stars like Sarah Jessica Parker and Cush Jumbo, suggests simply matching your blush to your lipstick color.
“When selecting a blush to complement your makeup, the best shade is usually in the same color family as your lipstick,” he advises. “Go for a monochromatic look, and you’ll never go wrong. For example, if you're wearing red or pink lipstick, choose a blush with a pink base to unify the overall appearance.”
He further explains that regardless of your skin tone, all complexions have some degree of red pigment, so a blush with a rosy undertone is universally flattering. In other words, when in doubt, always choose rosy hues.
Consider the Look You Want to Achieve
Building on the guidelines mentioned earlier, it’s also important to choose a blush that complements the overall look you're aiming for. “When prepping someone for makeup, I always take the time to think about how each element of the makeup will come together,” explains Young. “Blush can define the face by adding volume and creating structure.”
For instance, if you're channeling coquettecore vibes, a strawberry pink with flattering undertones is essential. On the other hand, if you're going for a classic ‘90s vintage style, mauve or brown-tinged shades will be your go-to. It all depends on the story you want your makeup to tell.
Think About Blush Texture
While color is key, texture is just as crucial when choosing the right blush. A matte powder blush creates a smooth finish—perfect for certain looks—while one with a touch of shimmer adds depth and reflects light beautifully.
Blushes with a lot of glitter create a bold look, making them perfect for high-glam, low-light settings. For a more natural, everyday glow, a cream blush with reflective properties is your best option. It delivers a soft, healthy finish.
Keep in Mind Blush Placement
In addition to color and texture, where you apply your blush can significantly impact the overall effect of your makeup.
“If you want to bring volume and radiance to your face, choose a cream blush or one with a pearl finish,” says Young. “This texture adds dimension and gives your complexion a fresh, glowing look.” For a more defined effect, he recommends applying a blush with neutral undertones along the tops of your cheekbones to lift and sculpt the face.
