Give each item a dedicated space and you’ll never have to search for that missing earring again!
Zoonar/ThinkstockWhether you're a queen of costume jewelry or a princess with pearls, having a well-thought-out system to organize your collection is essential. Whether you have a safe full of diamonds or a drawer packed with beaded necklaces, it’s important to store your jewelry in a dry area with low humidity. Damp environments can tarnish silver and even cause some gold pieces to corrode. So, storing your jewelry in the bathroom is not a good idea.
For those with a collection of gold, silver, and precious gemstones, especially diamonds, pearls, or other delicate stones, the best option is a quality jewelry box. Make sure it has plenty of compartments to keep your pieces separate and an area for hanging chains to prevent them from tangling. Store gold and silver jewelry in individual cotton bags to reduce moisture and still allow for airflow. While diamonds are incredibly tough, pearls and softer gemstones are prone to scratching, so they should never be stored together. Consider adding a moisture-absorbing item, like charcoal, white chalk, or silica gel, to help maintain proper humidity levels. Silica gel packets, commonly found with new shoes, can come in handy—so don't toss them! However, keep in mind that opals require moisture to remain intact and should be stored differently.
If you own several valuable pieces, a locking jewelry box is a good choice, but investing in a combination safe is even more prudent. This will not only protect your jewelry from theft but also safeguard it in the event of a fire. For better organization, consider a safe large enough to fit your jewelry boxes. The way you choose to organize your jewelry largely depends on how you pick your pieces for the day or evening. You could store similar items together or organize them by occasion, such as casual or formal. Another option is to group silver with silver and gold with gold, or to store all your emerald jewelry in one place. Ultimately, it’s all about what works best for you.
Creative Ways to Organize and Store Jewelry
A mannequin hand is a stylish way to display rings and bracelets.
FogStock/ThinkstockOnce you’ve decided on your organization system, it’s time for the fun part: finding creative ways to store your jewelry. If you have expensive pieces, it’s best to keep them securely stored. However, if you have some fun costume jewelry, display it proudly and incorporate it into your room décor.
Elegantly designed wooden boxes and stunning ceramic bowls are perfect for storing multiple items in one place. For a more creative touch, transform a piece of driftwood into a unique necklace or bracelet holder that could easily pass for a museum exhibit. Select a beautiful vase to act as the base and use floral foam to fit inside. Find a driftwood piece with many branches, curves, and bumps that naturally allow you to hang your jewelry. Place the base in the foam, cover with pebbles to secure the foam, and begin hanging your pieces.
You can also turn your jewelry collection into a stylish wall display. Start by choosing a large, interesting frame—at least 24 inches tall. Cut a piece of cork to fit the frame, either from an old corkboard or from a roll purchased at a home improvement store. Cover the cork with your favorite paper or fabric, then hang your jewelry using push pins. For an added flair, glue colorful buttons on top of the pins for a decorative touch.
If you’re short on space but still want to keep your jewelry organized and accessible, consider hiding it in plain sight with some creative storage options you’ll enjoy every day. For drawers, swap out the basic plastic containers for mismatched, colorful ceramic bowls or teacups. You don’t have to spend much—thrift stores and yard sales offer plenty of affordable options. Hang earrings from the edges of the bowls to easily spot pairs, and line the drawer with decorative paper for an extra bit of charm.
