When someone experiences road rage, it's a lose-lose situation for everyone, especially for fellow drivers. It’s unsettling to witness (and sometimes hear) such intense anger, unsure of where it might lead.
What can you do to remain calm and safe while a nearby driver gets caught up in rage? Here’s what you need to know.
If possible, move out of the way
If you're stuck in heavy traffic, it might be the reason behind someone's road rage. In some cases, it might be impossible to create space between you and them. However, if you're in a position where you can safely turn onto another road and distance yourself, take that chance.
Let go of your pride
When someone is being hostile or disrespectful toward you, it can be tempting to match their aggression. However, even if they’re at fault, this is not the moment to challenge them, speed up, respond to their gestures, or provoke them in any way.
Avoid eye contact
Refrain from making eye contact with the angry driver, as it could escalate the situation and lead to a confrontation. Keep your hands on the wheel and stay focused on the road.
Show empathy towards the other driver
Individuals experiencing road rage are often dealing with other personal challenges, alongside whatever triggered their frustration on the road. Clinical psychologist Lakeasha Sullivan, PhD, suggests responding with understanding for the driver in distress.
“Treat their anger as a temporary reaction and not a reflection of their character,” says Sullivan in an interview with Driving. “Anger often masks deeper emotions, like sadness. Imagine that they’ve just received some heartbreaking news and don't know how to handle it. Wish them well and move on.”
