Spilling nail polish on your carpet can feel like a disaster. But is it truly ruined? Not necessarily. Maria Dryfhout/ShutterstockMany people love to paint their nails with colorful polish, but when that polish ends up on your carpet, it can create a noticeable stain that feels nearly impossible to remove. Don’t worry, though—your carpet isn’t doomed forever!
Here’s how to remove nail polish from your carpet:
- Address any stain as soon as it appears. The longer a stain sits, the more difficult it is to remove.
- Gently blot up any excess spill using a paper towel until the surface is dry.
- Use a dull knife or the edge of a spoon to scrape off as much of the dried nail polish as possible.
- Apply non-oily nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol to a cloth and blot the stain. Continue blotting until the stain is gone, making sure to use the remover sparingly, as it can damage your carpet's latex backing.
- Mix liquid dish soap with warm water to create a very diluted solution, ensuring there’s little soap. Use a dishwashing liquid that is free of lanolin or bleach.
- Blot the stained area with a cloth dipped in the soap solution. This will remove any remaining nail polish remover and polish. Dab the area dry with a paper towel and repeat until the stain is gone.
- Spray a light mist of warm water to rinse the area.
- Place several paper towels over the area and weigh them down with something heavy, such as a stack of books. Leave them for about an hour to absorb any excess moisture.
- Finish by sprinkling some carpet freshener on your clean, dry carpet to give it a pleasant scent [sources: MrsClean and FabricLink].
