Using heat-based tools always carries a risk of accidents, but for those with the 5.4 million recalled handheld steamers, the risk of burns was even greater. Here's everything you need to know about the recall and how to claim a refund.
Which Handheld Steamers Are Part of the Recall?
If you own a handheld clothing steamer, it’s important to check its manufacturing details. About 5.4 million units of the Joy/JM-branded My Little Steamer and My Little Steamer Go Mini have been recalled due to the risk of ‘expelling, spraying, or leaking hot water during use,’ posing a significant burn risk, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Both steamers were produced by HSN, formerly known as the 'Home Shopping Network' and initially the 'Home Shopping Club.' In addition to being sold on HSN's television channel and HSN.com, the recalled models were also available at numerous retailers across the country, including Amazon, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Walmart, and Lowes, between January 2002 and December 2020.
The steamers were priced individually between $10 and $30, and in combination sets between $20 and $50. They came in a range of colors, including black, white, red, purple, and teal. Manufactured in China, they were imported by Ingenious Designs LLC, based in Ronkonkoma, NY, which has been a fully owned subsidiary of HSN since 1999.
HSN has received 227 reports of the steamers expelling hot water, with 106 of those incidents involving burns, including eight second-degree burns and six third-degree burns.
How to request a refund for your faulty steamer
If you own one of the recalled handheld steamers, stop using it immediately. Those who bought theirs between January 2018 and December 2020 are entitled to a full refund. Buyers of steamers purchased between January 2015 and December 2017 are eligible for a partial refund, while those who purchased before January 2015 will receive a voucher.
No matter which category you fall under, it's important to reach out to HSN for detailed instructions on how to receive your refund or voucher. You can contact them by calling 855-654-0942, available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday. Alternatively, visit www.SteamerRecallSettlement.com or the HSN website and click on 'Recall Information' for more details.
