Daily use of tubs and sinks often leads to the caulking between the fixture and wall cracking or becoming loose. This allows water to seep into the gap, potentially damaging the joint and the surrounding wall. To fix this, use silicone or bathtub caulk. Follow these steps to recaulk your bathroom and kitchen fixtures:
Step 1: Use a putty knife or utility knife to remove all old caulk from the joint.
Step 2: Thoroughly clean the joint with a strong household cleaner. If mildew is present, scrub it with chlorine bleach. Dry the joint completely using a clean rag wrapped around the blade of the putty knife.
Step 3: Apply fresh caulk to the joint. Cut the nozzle of the caulk tube at an angle to create an opening slightly larger than the joint. If caulking multiple joints, start with the smallest and gradually work up, recutting the nozzle as needed for larger joints.
Step 4: Allow the new caulk to dry for several hours. Avoid getting it wet during the drying process. Be sure to let the caulk fully cure (refer to the manufacturer's guidelines) before using the fixture.
