The anonymity of the internet often brings out the worst in people. For some, their dissatisfaction with their own lives leads them to ruin the experiences of others who are simply trying to enjoy some free time. In the case of Elden Ring, hackers have found a way to crash the game for unsuspecting players, trapping them in an endless death cycle.
As many of you know, Elden Ring—like other FromSoftware games—offers a multiplayer experience. This means players can join your game either by your summon or by invading. This is a normal part of the game. However, what isn’t normal is when players enter your game with the sole intention of making your save file unplayable.
These hackers, seen by their parents as mistakes, discovered a move in-game that causes the game to crash on PC. If this “hack” only resulted in your game crashing, it would be an annoying issue but not a significant one. Unfortunately, when you restart the game, your character becomes stuck in an infinite falling loop, unable to recover from a Site of Grace.
How to Resolve Elden Ring's Infinite Death Glitch
Fortunately, FromSoftware released a patch to fix this issue once and for all. The update went live on Wednesday, March 23, five days after @EldenRingUpdate's initial tweet. If you haven't updated your game yet, make sure to do so now. You'll be safe from the hack, as the patch is required to play online again.
I'll leave the original text as is here, so you can see what the initial workaround was for this issue before FromSoftware released the patch:
If you happen to encounter one of these players during your Elden Ring adventure and find yourself stuck in the infinite falling death loop, there's a workaround that has worked for some players. Reddit user Draiganedig shared their method for escaping this endless cycle.
When your glitched game loads, your character dies almost immediately. Almost. In the brief moment before death, press Alt + F4. This will close the game. When you restart the game, you'll have more time to act. Use that extra time to open your map, view the Sites of Grace list (Y on Xbox controller, Triangle on PlayStation controller), and quickly press the corresponding select button (A on Xbox, X on PlayStation).
If you can perform this action swiftly enough, it should pull you out of the falling loop and return you to a Site of Grace. However, it's not guaranteed to work for everyone, so results may vary.
In the meantime, you might want to consider disabling multiplayer until FromSoftware resolves this glitch. While Elden Ring’s online features are undoubtedly enjoyable, they're not worth the risk of having hackers sabotage your game at any moment.
