Dogs are wonderful companions, but trimming their nails is often a challenge. To help, we turned to veterinarian Dr. Valerie Patton for her expert advice on how to trim your dog's claws with ease and minimal discomfort.
Dr. Patton suggests starting by getting your dog used to having their paws handled before attempting to cut their nails. Gently touch and play with their feet, so they aren't startled when you bring in the clippers.
When you’re ready to trim, take your time—snip a little, reward with a treat, and repeat. If your dog is particularly excitable, consider trimming just one nail per day. Alternatively, you could have a friend hold your dog steady, which can make the process go much more smoothly.
Be mindful of the quick—the sensitive area inside the nail that can cause bleeding if clipped. On light-colored nails, you can see the pink quick, so avoid cutting into it. For dark nails, take small amounts off at a time, as you won’t be able to see the quick.
Lastly, remember to replace your nail clippers regularly to ensure they remain sharp. You’ll also want to keep Kwik Stop or cornstarch handy in case of any accidents.
