Sofas are a major investment, and the selection process can be daunting. You need to ensure it’s not only comfortable and functional but also fashionable. After all, once you’ve chosen, there’s no turning back—sofas are difficult to clean and even harder to return. Luckily, the process becomes much easier when you have guidance. Here’s how interior designers suggest picking the perfect sofa for any living room.
Take Accurate Measurements of Your Living Room
Even if you fall head over heels for a sofa, if it can’t physically fit in your space, you’ll be disappointed. Interior designer Kathy Kuo advises that the first step when shopping for a sofa is to measure your space repeatedly. “Your sofa will likely be the largest anchor piece in your home, and your satisfaction depends on knowing the exact dimensions of both the sofa and your space,” she says. “It may sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how often it’s overlooked!” Understanding your available space will help you rule out options that don’t fit and can even help you refine your budget.
Next, Measure Other Areas of Your Home
Shay Holland, interior designer and HGTV star, stresses the importance of measuring any spaces your sofa must pass through before reaching your living room. “We all know to measure the room and doorways to ensure it fits, but designers also consider many other measurements—from seat depth to arm width and more,” she explains.
Neglecting to take these measurements can lead to delivery mishaps. “I once got a frantic call from a client on delivery day,” Holland recalls. “She had measured the doorways and hallways to ensure clearance for the oversized sofa and arranged for a white-glove delivery service. But the deliverymen couldn’t make the turns in the stairwell. I had to hire four workers to lift the heavy sectional up the exterior of the house.”
Always Consider the Scale
Just because a sofa fits doesn’t automatically mean it’s the best choice, says interior designer Peter Spalding. One of the most common mistakes is selecting sofas that are too large for the room or have more seating than necessary. “Oversized sectionals are a frequent cause of cramped living rooms,” he notes. “Though large sectionals are designed for many people, they are often only partially used. Opting for a sofa that matches the room’s scale will keep the space feeling open and welcoming.”
Set Your Budget
Sofa prices can range widely, from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on size and materials. It’s important to consider both your long-term and short-term design plans when establishing your budget. “Quality matters,” Kuo advises. “Spending more upfront on a durable sofa that will last for years will save you money in the long run, compared to constantly replacing a cheaper one.” However, if you’re planning to move soon, that might also impact your budget.
Think About Your Lifestyle
Kuo recommends considering how you and your family will use the sofa on a daily basis. “If you have young children or pets, you might want to go with performance fabric for the upholstery,” she suggests. “For frequent large gatherings, a sectional could be ideal, offering plenty of space around the TV. However, if you prefer a more formal living room, something smaller and more intricate might be a better fit.”
Consider Modular Options
Modular sofas, which consist of individual pieces that connect together, are gaining popularity for good reason. They’re perfect for creating customizable seating layouts to suit your needs. Plus, you can purchase additional pieces to expand your sofa, making them especially appealing to growing families who can start with a single unit and adjust as their space requirements evolve.
However, Holland points out that modular sofas may not work for everyone. “I’m currently working with a client who’s about to get rid of her modular sofa because the pieces keep shifting,” she shares. “This is often due to uneven weight distribution or sudden movements, like someone plopping down or kids jumping on it.” Be sure to check the reviews before choosing a sofa that will stand the test of time.
