They eliminate the hassle of purchasing and transporting a live tree, which can be a daunting task. They also save you money by being reusable year after year. Additionally, they come in a variety of styles, from classic designs to unconventional options like pink or metallic trees.
To ensure your artificial tree lasts through many holiday seasons, proper storage is crucial. While it may seem straightforward, it requires careful planning. Here are expert tips on how to store your Christmas tree effectively.
Remove The Ornaments
According to Brianna Porpora, designer and holiday curator at Jade House Design, the first step in storing artificial trees is to carefully remove fragile or breakable ornaments and pack them separately.
Kelly Lambert, senior merchant at Grandin Road, recommends dusting each ornament with a dry cloth before storage. "For optimal protection, place ornaments back into their original packaging or use specialized ornament storage containers. Wrapping each ornament in tissue paper adds an extra layer of safety. If hooks remain attached, ensure they are outside the tissue to prevent scratches," she advises.
Discard any damaged ornaments you don’t plan to reuse next Christmas.
Dust the Tree
Lambert recommends gently cleaning your tree with a dusting cloth or feather duster before storage. A microfiber cloth is ideal, but any available cloth will suffice.
Gently Fluff and Style the Branches
If you skipped fluffing your artificial tree’s branches when you first set it up, now’s the time to do so. This step ensures the branches don’t remain compressed and flat, as they were when initially unpacked. "Fluffing makes setup easier in subsequent years," Lambert notes. "Some reshaping will be needed annually, but far less than the initial effort."
Invest in a Storage Bag Made for This Purpose
Avoid simply repacking your tree in its original box. Opt for a storage bag or container specifically designed for Christmas trees. Options range from rolling bags to upright stands, catering to various tree sizes, storage spaces, and home setups.
Store Everything Together
Prepare for next year’s holiday season by storing all tree components in one location. "Keep the tree sections, lights, and stand together to avoid searching for them when setting up next year," Lambert advises.
Find a Good Spot to Store Your Tree
The ideal storage locations for your tree are closets or attics. Porpora warns against using basements, as they can pose risks. "Store trees upright in a cool, dry place, and elevate them if there’s a risk of flooding," she suggests.
If basement storage is unavoidable due to space constraints, place boxes or plastic totes underneath the tree for elevation.
