Amid the many corporate data breaches discovered in recent years, the Yahoo breach—where 500 million account passwords were compromised in 2016—might have slipped your mind.
The time has come to submit your claim for a share of Yahoo’s $117.5 million class-action settlement. This lawsuit encompasses four distinct data breaches that occurred at Yahoo from 2012 to 2016.
You qualify for compensation if you received a notice about the breach in 2016 or 2017, or if you maintained a Yahoo account between 2012 and 2016.
As with similar breach settlements, Yahoo is offering two options: you can receive two years of free credit monitoring, or if you already have such a service, request $100. Similar to the Equifax case, your cash payout could be less than $100 if too many people opt for the cash. The settlement also mentions that if there’s remaining funds, you could receive up to $358.80. (Our suggestion: Don’t hold your breath for any leftover funds.)
If you choose to file a claim for reimbursement of expenses and/or up to 15 hours of time spent dealing with the consequences of the breach, you may submit proof to receive up to $25,000.
To file your claim, you’ll need your Yahoo username. You can submit your claim directly on the settlement website.
The final approval for the settlement is set for April 2, 2020, and the deadline to submit your claim is July 20, 2020.
