Changing your Gmail password is a simple process. Photo by MoMo Productions/Getty ImagesIn today's digital age, protecting your passwords should be a top priority to ensure online safety. Whether safeguarding sensitive information from cybercriminals or just adding an extra layer of protection to your online presence, Google makes updating your Gmail password both secure and straightforward. Here’s how to do it.
- Visit Google.com If you’re not signed in yet, log in to your account now.
- Click the Account icon. In the top-right corner, select the account button, which may show your account photo (or your initial if there’s no photo). Then click Manage Your Google Account.
- Select "Security." On the left side of the screen, click the Security tab.
- Click "Password." In the middle of the screen, find and click the Password option.
- Sign in again. Google will ask you to enter your current password to proceed with the change.
- Choose your new password. It’s time to create a new one. Longer passwords tend to be more secure; Google suggests using at least 12 characters, mixing letters, numbers, and symbols for added strength.
When selecting a password, avoid using information that could easily be found on your social media profiles, such as your pet's name or birth date. Also, steer clear of common passwords like "123456", "password", or "picture1"—all three were among the top five most-used passwords on a list of common passwords.
