If you’ve ever had to amend your tax return, you’re familiar with the traditional method of mailing your forms. However, that will change later this summer when the IRS introduces the electronic version of Form 1040X.
The IRS has been planning to digitize this process for a while, as stated in a recent announcement. The electronic form will enable the IRS to handle amended returns more efficiently and help reduce the errors commonly found on paper forms.
When the digital version becomes available, it will only support amendments for 2019 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR. For all other situations, you'll still need to use the paper filing option.
The electronic version of the form will be accessible via tax software programs. If you need to amend a recent tax return, simply revisit the platform you originally used to file.
Each year, approximately three million 1040X forms are filed, according to the IRS. While it is commonly used to correct errors, an amended return can also be filed to take advantage of tax credits that have been retroactively reinstated.
