Getting turned down for a raise can be discouraging, but if you feel you’re deserving of a pay bump, it might be worth suggesting a follow-up in six months.
Laura Shin, a contributor to Forbes, offers the following advice:
In the event of a 'no,' there are a few steps you can take. Inquire about the specific criteria for a promotion and raise, and work with clear, measurable goals. Then, ask if you can revisit the conversation in six months, using your achievements as evidence to support your case for a promotion and raise.
If the issue is the company's budget, Shin recommends asking to be placed on a six-month review schedule, which may open the possibility of receiving two smaller raises instead of one larger one.
