The fitness legend Richard Simmons has stepped away from teaching and creating videos in recent years. (Some say witchcraft may be to blame, others point to bad knees, depending on who you talk to.) But you can still enjoy his last YouTube workout.
The workout features eight videos, each lasting five minutes. You can follow the first seven using this playlist. For the cool-down, you can either repeat the warm-up (it serves a dual purpose) or click over to the eighth video, where Richard shares emotional affirmations. Let go of grudges, he reminds us. And don’t forget—you are worth more than all the rainbows in the sky and all the pearls in the ocean.
Three of the videos involve energizing dance routines. They’re not overly challenging, although the camera angles can make it difficult to see exactly what Simmons is doing. It took me a moment to realize that everything is essentially a variation of a few core moves, and soon enough, I was dancing right along with Richard and his team.
After the cardio sessions, there are three videos focusing on dumbbell strength exercises. I started with five-pound weights, which felt light at first but were just right by the end. If you’re new to working out, this is a solid strength workout. For those accustomed to lifting heavier weights, it won’t replace a gym session, but it’s a great option for adding a bit of exercise on a rest day. As Richard always says, every time you work out, you’re saying “I love you” to your body.
If you’re looking for a quick five-minute workout, choose one of the videos—maybe Cardio One—and get moving while Richard Simmons cheers you on, calling you a pretty pony.
