Small talk can be tough, but if you're aiming to truly connect with someone, FBI Behavioral Expert Robin Dreeke recommends asking about the challenges they've encountered over the week as the key question to get closer.
It's well known that asking questions and actively listening is an effective way to build rapport, but coming up with the right question can sometimes be tricky. Speaking with Barking Up the Wrong Tree, Dreeke explains why inquiries about challenges are a powerful way to win someone over:
A great question I personally enjoy asking is about challenges: "What challenges did you face at work this week? What challenges do you encounter living in this area? What kinds of challenges do you experience raising teenagers?" Everyone deals with challenges, and this question invites them to reveal what's currently important in their life.
Of course, this is just one tactic to help get the conversation started, but it's a solid one. Check out Barking Up the Wrong Tree for more helpful tips.
