Grocery shopping often comes with the assumption that food items have been inspected and are likely safe to consume. However, the complex process of food production and distribution leaves room for errors, and occasionally, issues slip through. Currently, frozen pasta products from Avanza Pasta, LLC., based in Evanston, Illinois, are under scrutiny.
On Saturday, Avanza Pasta, LLC. issued a recall for approximately 2,237 pounds of meat and poultry pasta products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) stated these items were produced without federal inspection. Here’s a breakdown of the affected brands and their distribution details.
Which Products Are Being Recalled
The recalled products include meat and poultry ravioli and tortellini manufactured between October 5, 2019, and March 12, 2021. Avanza Pasta produces these items not only under its own brand but also for other labels such as Ambrosino’s, Conte De Savoia, Frank’s Deli, Frankie’s Deli, Gene’s, Nature’s Best, Prisco’s Family Market, Tony’s Italian Deli & Subs, and Vesuvio Bakery & Deli, among others.
The FSIS reports that the affected pasta products were distributed to restaurants, distributors, and retail outlets in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. A comprehensive list of the recalled items, including their best-by or use-by dates, is available. To assist consumers, the FSIS has compiled a document featuring the labels of all recalled pasta products.
Steps to Take If You Own These Products
Fortunately, as of Saturday, March 20, there have been no confirmed cases of illness linked to the consumption of these uninspected pasta products. However, if you have eaten any of the recalled ravioli or tortellini and experience adverse reactions, the FSIS advises consulting a healthcare professional immediately.
If you discover any of the recalled pasta products in your freezer, refrain from consuming them. Dispose of them or return them to the point of purchase. For further inquiries regarding the recall, contact Pavlos Loumbroukos, operations manager at Avanza Pasta, LLC., at (847) 584-2891.
