The 2020 Census is almost here! While the process comes with its share of challenges, it remains an enormous project that demands the participation of a vast number of people—half a million to be exact. This large-scale hiring process is already underway, as the Census will begin in August.
If you're looking to earn some extra money, consider applying to become one of the many individuals tasked with going door-to-door to count those who haven't completed their survey online, by phone, or by mail.
Pay rates vary by location, starting at approximately $13 per hour. In some urban areas, pay can reach up to $30 per hour. The Census Bureau hires across the nation but generally recruits people to work within their local areas.
Most positions are for census takers who visit homes to encourage people to complete the census, often working evening and weekend shifts. Some administrative roles are available at local offices.
To apply, you must be at least 18, have a valid Social Security Number, be a U.S. citizen, possess a valid email address, and pass a criminal background check. Most roles require access to a vehicle and the ability to drive, unless you're in an area served by public transportation. A computer and internet access are needed to complete the training. The application takes about 30 minutes to fill out online.
Census positions pay on a weekly basis (with the first paycheck arriving 10-14 days after starting) and offer mileage reimbursement for any driving needed for fieldwork. The job duration depends on the Census Bureau's needs in your area, with most positions lasting a few weeks rather than months.
Being a census taker is not a long-term employment option. However, if you have a flexible schedule and are looking to earn extra money—whether it's for tuition savings or to pay off some debt—this job could bring you closer to your financial goals.
