The Evarcha culicivora, a small spider native to the Lake Victoria region in East Africa, has a unique craving for blood. However, unlike the mythical Dracula, this spider lacks the ability to pierce human skin. Instead, it satisfies its bloodlust indirectly by targeting other blood-consuming creatures.
Equipped with sharp vision, a keen sense of smell, and impressive jumping abilities, this spider is a skilled hunter. In controlled experiments, E. culicivora consistently prefers female mosquitoes that have recently fed on blood. Remarkably, it can detect these blood-engorged mosquitoes by scent alone. This makes it the only known animal that selects its prey based on what its prey has eaten.
By targeting mosquitoes, the spider avoids the dangers of directly attacking larger animals. Even if it were physically capable of feeding on humans or other big creatures, the risk of being harmed would be high. Hunting mosquitoes provides a safer and more efficient way to satisfy its blood needs.
The spiders’ unique approach to vampirism may also benefit humans. They specifically hunt mosquitoes from the Anopheles genus, which are primary carriers of malaria. Their exceptional vision enables them to identify mosquito species by their posture and differentiate genders through the structure of the insects’ antennae, making them highly selective hunters.
