Dr. Jeffrey Dover, a Boston dermatologist and co-director of SkinCare Physicians, explains that glycolic face wash can brighten the skin and help with acne and excess oil. "It can lighten brown spots and promote a more even complexion," he adds. Dr. Dover suggests using it daily or scaling back to once a week if your skin shows irritation. "Certain skin types, including mine, can be sensitive to glycolic acid," says Dr. Dover.
Glycolic acid is a type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), a popular ingredient known for its exfoliating properties, helping to shed dead skin cells. The level of exfoliation depends on factors such as the type and concentration of AHA used, its pH, and other ingredients in the product. [source: FDA] Exfoliation plays a crucial role in skincare routines, brightening dull skin, removing dead cells, and leaving the skin smooth and soft. If you're prone to acne, this process can reduce the chances of breakouts. Some skincare specialists also believe it may help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. [Cleveland Clinic]
Generally, glycolic face wash is suitable for all skin types, except for those with very sensitive skin. "If the skin becomes red or feels burning sensations, I would advise patients to use it less often," says Dr. Joshua Fox, Medical Director of Advanced Dermatology PC. "Since glycolic acid comes in various concentrations, try a product with a lower percentage if it causes irritation or discomfort," suggests Dr. Fox. He recommends using products with a glycolic acid concentration of 10-15 percent.
Some research indicates that certain AHAs, including glycolic acid, may increase sensitivity to UV light. If you're using glycolic face wash for the first time, make sure to apply sunscreen generously.
A glycolic face wash can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, rejuvenate skin, minimize acne scars, and enhance the absorption and effectiveness of other treatments. "I often advise patients to combine it with other acne treatments," says Dr. Fox. However, he recommends not using glycolic face wash and lotion together; choose one or the other.
