Products are improving, head spas are becoming a trend (make an appointment!), hair oiling is on the rise, and scalp care is getting the spotlight. Double shampooing is also gaining popularity as a haircare ritual. Not sure what it is? Let us break it down for you.
What Exactly Is Double Shampooing?
Double shampooing refers to the technique of washing your hair with shampoo twice consecutively during a single shower. The first wash works to break down sweat, oil, dirt, and product buildup, while the second wash focuses on cleaning your hair thoroughly and delivering the nourishing benefits of the product to your strands.
“The first wash tackles the tough stuff, and the second wash is able to reach deeper into your scalp for a thorough cleanse,” says Anna Chacon, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist. “This is fantastic for scalp health, and as we know, a healthy scalp equals healthy hair.”
The technique for shampooing remains the same each time. Wet your hair, apply the shampoo, massage it into your scalp with your fingertips, and rinse. The only difference is you repeat the process. Honestly, shampoo bottles have been encouraging us to do this for a while now: lather, rinse, and repeat!
Who Should Try Double Shampooing?
Double shampooing is especially effective for individuals with thick hair, wavy textures, oily scalps, or those who wash their hair less frequently (fewer than two to three times a week). It’s also great for people who use heavy styling products and need that extra wash to ensure everything is properly removed.
“I often recommend double washing for clients who use a lot of styling products, as their hair and scalp can become weighed down with chemicals and oils, making it harder to style,” says celebrity hairstylist Julia North. “I also suggest this routine to clients who wash their hair infrequently or have naturally oily hair. And for swimmers, it’s essential to thoroughly remove chlorine.”
Who Should Avoid Double Shampooing?
If you find that a single shampoo works just fine for your hair, or you already wash your hair daily, then you can likely skip the extra wash. Overwashing can disrupt your natural oil balance, leading to dryness, irritation, or even excess oil production in some cases.
“I don't recommend double washing for clients with very dry or damaged hair. Curly hair is particularly prone to breakage due to dryness, so I advise curly-haired clients to avoid double washing,” North explains. “People with color-treated hair, especially those with vibrant shades, may notice their color fading faster with double washing.”
Key Takeaway on Double Shampooing
In the end, it's important to listen to your hair’s needs and adjust your routine accordingly. There's no universal solution. North advises that if your hair and scalp feel clean after just one shampoo, it's likely best to stop there. However, if you still sense product buildup, grease, or dirt, a second round of shampooing should be fine.
