Among the various oils suitable for skincare, jojoba oil stands out as a popular choice.

Although it has gained popularity in the U.S. only recently, this lipid has been a go-to remedy for dry skin for hundreds of years, particularly in Mexico [Source: Zeichner]. But does this oil truly hold the key to achieving soft, well-hydrated skin?
Derived from the seeds of the jojoba tree, native to the Southwestern U.S., jojoba oil is technically not an oil but a waxy substance closely resembling human sebum. Its similarity to our skin's natural oil allows it to potentially regulate oil production by signaling the skin to reduce excess sebum [Source: Acne.org]. "Jojoba oil contains natural fats that closely resemble those found in the skin's outer layer," says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. "This makes it effective in locking in moisture and promoting skin repair."

Its dual cleansing and hydrating qualities make it a common ingredient in shampoos, cleansers, and moisturizers for both face and body [Source: Levine]. Additionally, it can serve as an effective lip balm or a pre-shave treatment for men.
"As an oil, jojoba acts as an excellent moisturizer and minimizes the skin's natural moisture loss," explains Francesca Fusco, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. Studies indicate that jojoba oil is quickly absorbed into the skin.
Key takeaway: Packed with essential fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamin E, and sterols (lipid-like compounds that combat inflammation and enhance skin metabolism), jojoba oil is highly beneficial for the skin. For those struggling with dryness or flakiness, pure jojoba oil or products infused with it can transform your skin, leaving it soft and well-moisturized.
