Unfortunately, tanning can pose risks to an unborn child. While we all understand the dangers of too much sun exposure and the importance of using sunscreen—especially since skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S.—there’s an even more critical reason to avoid tanning while pregnant.
Think back to your last tanning bed session. Did you feel overheated or uncomfortable at any point? Most likely, the answer is yes. Now, imagine how your baby must feel in that heat. If you’re feeling hot on the outside, you’re likely experiencing heat internally as well. This can be dangerous for both you and your baby, particularly as your pregnancy progresses. Exposure to this type of heat could cause complications such as spinal malformations and spina bifida, among others [source: American Pregnancy Association]. It’s simply not worth the risk.
Some people believe that sun exposure is essential for vitamin D production, which is especially important for pregnant women. While this is true to some extent, it’s only beneficial in small amounts, and you don’t need much to meet your daily requirement. A simple walk outdoors is usually enough.
Ultimately, it’s always better to err on the side of caution. Remember, pregnancy lasts only nine months. In the meantime, focus on maintaining a balanced diet, staying active, and enjoying the sun in moderation. And, of course, never forget to apply sunscreen.
