What Are the Benefits of Using Real Cucumber on Your Eyes?
Although placing thin cucumber slices over your eyes won’t radically change your complexion, this classic beauty remedy offers several notable advantages.
“The cucumber’s cooling effect can help reduce puffiness and swelling while boosting blood circulation to the skin,” says Dr. Deanne Robinson, board-certified dermatologist. “Cucumbers are also packed with water, which hydrates the skin. When left on the skin for a few minutes, it can absorb this water, helping to smooth fine lines.”
Esthetician Erica Marie Gatt, founder of EM Skin, concurs. She explains that cucumbers are rich in vitamins C and K, offering a brightening effect, reducing dark circles under the eyes, and protecting against free radical damage.
“Because cucumbers naturally provide a cooling sensation—especially when taken straight from the fridge or freezer—they serve as a vasoconstrictor, reducing blood flow, which tightens and smooths the skin under the eyes,” says Gatt. “The great news is you can reap all these benefits for free by growing them in your own garden,” Gatt adds.
(Or if gardening isn’t your thing, you can always find them at the grocery store for a very affordable price.)

How to Apply Cucumber to Your Eyes
Applying cucumbers to your eyes is as straightforward as it sounds.
Step 1: Cleanse
Be sure to wash the cucumber thoroughly and rinse it well, especially if using soap. This minimizes the risk of bacteria or dirt getting into your eyes. On that note, Robinson recommends opting for organic cucumbers when possible, as conventional ones tend to have more pesticide residues.
Step 2: Conduct a Patch Test
“If you have sensitive skin, it’s a good idea to do a patch test on your arm to check for any swelling, particularly near the delicate eye area,” advises Gatt. Leave it on for 10 minutes to ensure there’s no redness, irritation, or swelling.
Step 3: Cut & Apply
If everything looks fine, cut the cucumbers into slices about ¼ inch thick and place them over your eyes. For a more refreshing experience, chill them in the fridge for 15 to 30 minutes before applying. Leave them on for 5 to 10 minutes, or until they warm up, then discard them.
Step 4: Use a Moisturizer
Seal in the hydration and nutrients with a nourishing eye cream.
Alternatives to Using Real Cucumbers on Your Eyes
If you’re allergic to cucumbers, don’t have any available, or simply prefer to try something different, there are plenty of great alternatives that can work just as effectively.
Ice Rollers
Dr. Robinson suggests you can experience the same soothing and depuffing effects with a chilled ice roller or ice globe. Consider trying the Flawless Facial Massage Ice Roller or the Sephora Collection Mini Cooling Eye Set.
Cold Compress
“Not a fan of cucumbers on your eyes but love them in your salad? Cool compresses can be an effective alternative,” says Adriana Martino, licensed esthetician and co-founder of Skinney Medspa. You might want to try the Up&Up Hot+Cold Gel Bead Eye Mask.
Chilled Eye Masks
An eye mask that covers your eyes (rather than just the area underneath) can replicate the cucumber effect on your eyes. Earth Therapeutics Recover-E Cucumber Eye Pads are even shaped like cucumbers and infused with cucumber extract, aloe, green tea, chamomile, and Vitamin E.
Water-Based Hydrators
Boost hydration by first applying a water-based moisturizer for plumping effects, much like a cucumber, and then follow up with an eye cream. Try e.l.f. Holy Hydration! Eye Cream.
