You likely keep harmful substances like medications and cleaners out of children's reach, but cosmetics can be dangerous too. According to a recent study, children are frequently harmed by cosmetics, suffering from poisoning and even chemical burns.
Although such incidents are rare, with around 64,400 cases treated in U.S. emergency departments over the last 15 years, many parents may not recognize cosmetics as potential hazards. These products are designed to attract, with bright colors, enticing smells, and user-friendly packaging, making them especially appealing to curious kids.
Some of the most severe injuries come from chemicals found in hair relaxers and perm solutions, as well as from ingesting nail care products like polish removers. While no fatalities have been reported, many children have been hospitalized due to these injuries.
The American Academy of Pediatrics advises storing cosmetics out of children's reach and/or securing them in a locked or safety-latched cabinet. The study revealed that the types of injuries vary as children grow, indicating that younger toddlers tend to explore items by putting them in their mouths, sometimes opening drawers or accessing things parents might not have realized were within reach. As children get a bit older, they gain enough skill to perform actions like spraying perfume into their eyes. Never underestimate the persistence of a toddler, and always ensure that hazardous items are kept out of their reach.
