Fashion tends to swing like a pendulum, meaning trends that fall out of favor eventually make their way back into the spotlight. Despite doubts about jelly fashion's return, this playful and colorful style is officially back in full force with its signature squishy look.
“Jelly fashion includes plastic or rubber accessories—primarily shoes and bags—that resemble candy,” explains stylist Christina Stein. “It’s fun, bold, and makes a statement.”
Loving the Y2K vibe? We’ve got the scoop on its revival, along with tips for adding jelly pieces to your wardrobe and some of our top picks.
The Resurgence of Jelly Fashion
Jelly fashion first emerged in the 1950s with shoes, but it really took off in the late '80s and continued through the early 2000s with bold neon hues and fun designs, according to Stein. Fast forward 20 years, and jelly fashion is back in full force.
“Thanks to the Y2K revival happening in fashion, jelly pieces have made their return, evoking the spirit of that era,” says Julie Kraus, stylist and image consultant. “Seen on the runway at Coach’s Spring 2023 show with its classic flat cage style, as well as a platform variation popularized by Prada, jellies have made a strong comeback in both their timeless form and with new, modern updates.”
Telfar recently launched handbags with a structured design in bright, bold colors, while Gucci introduced jelly sandals that sold out quickly due to their affordability. It’s clear that the demand for jelly is stronger than ever.
How to Incorporate Jelly Into Your Outfits
Fashion blends timeless staples with trendier, fun pieces, and jelly accessories fall into the latter category, says Kraus. They’re a playful way to embrace the trend without breaking the bank. For that reason, she advises keeping it affordable and lighthearted, as the trend may be short-lived. If you’re opting for jelly shoes, pairing them with socks can help you capture that Y2K vibe while preventing blisters.
Stein agrees on the value of affordability and suggests picking up one or two statement pieces that truly stand out. “I recommend starting with a handbag in a color you already have a lot of in your wardrobe. It’s an easy way to work it into your current collection,” she says.
