While immersed in writing the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling started crafting a new story titled The Ickabog, which she shared with her kids as a bedtime serial. Initially intended for release after Harry Potter, she instead took a much-deserved break from children’s literature that spanned over ten years.
Now, Rowling has revealed that The Ickabog will finally be published, and she’s releasing it for free as an online serial. The first two chapters are live on the book’s website, with new installments set to drop every weekday until July 10, 2020. Set in the imaginary land of Cornucopia, the story follows King Fred the Fearless and his companions, Lords Spittleworth and Flapoon, as young Bert Beamish confronts the terrifying myth of the Ickabog, a sinister creature said to prey on children. Rowling describes the tale as exploring themes of “truth and the misuse of power,” ideal for readers aged 9 and under.
This November, the book will be available in print, e-book, and audiobook formats, with all author royalties going to organizations affected by the pandemic. Rowling is also inviting readers to submit their artwork for a chance to be included in the printed version. The website provides suggestions for illustrations, such as King Fred, the Ickabog, and Cornucopia’s map and flag, but encourages creativity beyond these ideas.
