- Lear claims that the moon landings were fabricated and that the U.S. government has been in contact with extraterrestrials for years.
- Despite heavy skepticism from the scientific world, Lear's theories continue to captivate and shape the beliefs of many conspiracy enthusiasts.
In recent years, increasingly bizarre and extreme forms of paranoia have emerged at the edges of ufology. These ideas stem not only from UFO sightings but also from conspiracy theories linked to the far-right political fringe. Two key figures in what is referred to as the 'dark side movement' are John Lear, a former pilot who flew for a CIA-connected company, and Milton William Cooper, a retired Navy petty officer.
Followers of the dark side movement believe in the existence of a ruthless 'secret government' that controls the world. This government is allegedly involved in illegal activities, including running the global drug trade and deliberately introducing diseases like AIDS as part of a population-control strategy. Their ultimate goal is to transform Earth and the surrounding planets into slave-labor colonies. For years, this secret government is said to have been in contact with alien species, offering human abductions in exchange for advanced extraterrestrial technology.
The aliens, called the 'grays' due to their grayish skin, are not only known for abducting humans but also for mutilating and consuming them to rejuvenate themselves. In collaboration with the secret government, the aliens supposedly work together in large underground bases in New Mexico and Nevada. In these bases, they allegedly collect both human and animal organs, mix them in a chemical solution, and create soulless androids. These androids, known as the 'men in black,' are used to carry out covert operations for the government-alien alliance. Each new retelling, along with new books, documentaries, and media, only adds to the growing absurdity of the story.
In one variation of the conspiracy, the conspirators travel into the future to witness events such as the rise of the anti-Christ in the 1990s, World War III in 1999, and the Second Coming of Christ in 2011. George Bush is said to oversee the global drug trade. The secret government supposedly established bases on Mars in the early 1960s. The conspirators are believed to use drugs and hypnosis to manipulate unstable individuals into becoming mass murderers, targeting schoolchildren and other innocents. The goal of this is to stir up anti-gun sentiment, which would lead to stricter gun control laws. This disarmament would leave Americans vulnerable when the secret government's stormtroopers round them up and send them to concentration camps.
A fervent group of believers around the world has embraced these outlandish stories, despite the complete lack of supporting evidence. The origins of these exaggerated tales are easy to trace: they are a mixture of UFO lore, extremist political writings, and a 1977 British mockumentary called Alternative 3. This show was intended to parody popular paranoia, yet many still believe it was an accurate documentary, ironically fueling further waves of gullibility and fear.
