Explore additional photos of perennial blossoms.Jupiter's Beard, or Red Valerian, was initially described as a "cheerful and blowzy plant" when it arrived in England in the sixteenth century. Often, these plants are sold under the name V. coccineus.
Overview of Jupiter's Beard: This plant produces fragrant, 1/2-inch scarlet to red flowers that bloom in dense clusters along 2- to 3-foot stems. The flowers start to bloom in spring and continue for an extended period if old stems are pruned.
Growing tips for Jupiter's Beard: Red Valerian thrives in well-drained soil and full sunlight but can tolerate light shade. Alkaline soil encourages optimal growth, while overly rich soil can hinder the plant. To promote more flowers, cut back the flowering stems. If blooms slow during hot summer months, cut back plants by one-third to one-half to stimulate another round of flowers in late summer. Valerian readily self-seeds, and seedlings often appear throughout the garden. If you prefer to limit new growth, simply pull unwanted plants or remove old blooms before they can set seeds.
Propagating Jupiter's Beard: By division or seed.
Uses of Jupiter's Beard: This plant thrives in mass plantings and is often seen growing naturally along old walls and rocky outcrops. It also makes a durable cut flower and provides a valuable nectar source for butterflies.
Varieties related to Jupiter's Beard: The variety Centranthus ruber var. alba produces white flowers, while C. ruber var. coccineus has deep red flowers, and C. ruber var. roseus features rose-colored blooms.
Scientific name for Jupiter's Beard: Centranthus ruber
