Android/iOS: Teaching your kids about money can help them build strong financial habits for the future. However, many of us don't handle cash much anymore; we typically use debit cards. The KiDebit app helps kids learn to budget their virtual allowances as well.
Jacob Birmingham, the app's creator, came up with the idea for KiDebit when his daughter asked for her weekly allowance, but he couldn't provide it because he didn't have cash. This led to the creation of a makeshift debit card for her, which eventually evolved into the virtual concept.
According to the founders' website, the free app allows children to set goals for saving, spending, and giving. It tracks a virtual balance in their account. You can also order or print a card with a QR code (available designs on the site), and scan it to check the account balance.
Birmingham explains that the goal is to give children the chance to learn how to spend money independently, preparing them for real-world financial decisions.
KiDebit makes it easier for parents to manage their kids' spending while shopping. Kids can now independently check prices and their available balance by asking, "Can I buy this...?" and finding the answer themselves.
If you're seeking a fun way to teach children about budgeting, this app is definitely worth exploring.
