Moonlighting is a fantastic way to boost your income while holding down a full-time job. However, it can pose challenges, especially when it interferes with your work time. The Wall Street Journal suggests a clever approach: align your side hustle with your employer's priorities.
Dennis Nishi from WSJ shares:
If you believe your side project could benefit your employer, experts recommend pitching your idea to your boss. You may receive support such as flexible hours, remote work options, or even financial backing. Reassure your boss that your main job takes precedence and that your side work is done only after hours. Be honest about your capacity to manage both without one affecting the other...
Nishi shares the story of a man who started a nonprofit on the side. By applying his marketing expertise, he brought value to his full-time job. His employer recognized the benefits and granted him scheduling flexibility:
He has since rolled out several successful marketing campaigns that he first tested with his nonprofit, including a video collaboration with a rock band that garnered a million views. Recently, he was promoted to marketing director.
Naturally, this could be considered an ideal outcome. And of course, it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. However, if you're looking to kick off your own side venture, this is a great approach to consider.
